quicksilver

well this was a nice surprise! space whale studios just released return all robots, and my remix of “deep freeze” from the game’s soundtrack got posted over at ocr. you can download the soundtrack for free, or you can buy the game and/or the soundtrack in various media formats and bundle configurations.

the original track is the music for the “cryogenics lab” stage, and i wanted to convey that in the remix. something sedate and pristine. the main image i had in mind was the album cover for stupid dream by porcupine tree. quicksilver is sort of an unfortunate title. it is i guess an archaic term for liquid mercury, which is the sense that i meant it, but it is such an overused word for unrelated things that people will probably end up associating it with a pair of jeans or smth.

deadmau5 – 4×4=12

up until the release of “ghosts n stuff” back in 2008, deadmau5 was often criticized for being able to come up with catchy chord progressions and not a whole lot else. although “ghosts” hinted at a change in direction for deadmau5, it never really worked on its own (even after the addition of rob swire’s vocals), failing to capture the wild, unrestrained attitude of electro house, instead sounding overly laboured and mechanical.

on his latest album, 4×4=12, deadmau5 attempts to fulfill the promise of “ghosts n stuff”. the album almost entirely abandons the progressive house sound of random album title and the techno influence of for lack of a better name in favour of a more abrasive electro/dubstep style.

frequently this results in music that tries too hard to appease mainstream audiences with flavour-of-the-month gimmicks. “sofi needs a ladder”, features a needlessly tacked-on, ke$ha-knockoff vocal that adds nothing to an already uninspired instrumental. the centerpiece of the album, the ten and a half minute “cthulhu sleeps”, is remarkably ineffective in its use of tension and release, something which is the very hallmark of deadmau5’s sound. without any real sense of direction, the gurgling bassline mostly just sits there, as though it might become danceable through sheer force of will.

we get shades of classic deadmau5 in “raise your weapon,” a track reminiscent of his signature chilled-out progressive house sound. at the halfway mark, deadmau5 turns his own formula on its head as the beat is suddenly dismantled by a datsik-esque drop into menacing dubstep. the juxtaposition is jarring, as the two contrasting ideas are barely held together by greta svabo bach’s vocals which take on a sinister quality as they float over top of the churning beat.

with 4×4=12, deadmau5 seems determined to prove that he is capable of spontaneity in his productions. by cherry picking the most basic elements of other popular styles and forcing it together with his own, he is left with music that not only fails to be spontaneous, but distracts from the things he actually is good at. perhaps he should check his math again.

western djs presents: the best day of your life

this is the hour i did for yesterdays western djs 12 hour mix. in hindsight i probably should have taken into consideration the several hours of music that had already played before me. my mix was probably too much of a singular thing, starting off light, gradually building up, then tapering off at the end. on the other hand i had no idea who the djs were before/after me or what they would be playing, so i figured i should just do my own thing. feedback was generally positive though, aside from the one guy who was chirping the stream pretty hard. anyway…i’ll leave it up to you guys to judge.

shoutouts to everyone on facebook/chat/im/etc who was liking posts and saying nice things. ilu guys ^__^

reveal hidden patterns

been wanting to do a japanese hip-hop mix for some time now. in my head i always think of japanese hip-hop as some alternate reality to north american hip-hop, like someone over there stepped on a butterfly and they missed the jiggy era and jazz-influenced hip-hop dominated instead.

it came out much shorter than i had hoped. i generally try to have anywhere between 20-40 tracks to choose from when i’m planning out these mixes. it just so happened that the cutting process along with other issues like file compatibility and wanting to not have the same artist more than once left me with only 7 tracks.

it’s still a fun little mix though, i think, and appropriate for this peaceful december weather.

stephan moccio – color

when discussing his debut album stephan moccio expressed a yearning for simplicity as the basis. a collection of 22 short pieces for solo piano, exposure was not only a showcase for moccio’s knack for melody, but a glimpse into the songwriter’s music in its original, ungarnished state. similarly, color consists of brief musical snapshots, each signifying a particular theme. the result is an album that feels more like flipping through a painter’s sketchbook than viewing a single complete work.

it would be unfair, however, to suggest that color is merely a grab bag of discarded ideas. moccio displays a sophisticated use of brevity to convey meaning without overstating the point. the insistent chimes of “hourglass” seem to have hardly begun before abruptly fading into nothingness. in all of 45 seconds, the piece manages to be a gentle yet poignant reminder of the transience of time.

the album closes with a re-imagining of “october”, a piece which first appeared on exposure,  now underscored by a lush string accompaniment and a driving rhythm section. fully realized, “october” demonstrates the potential for expansion in moccio’s deceptively simple compositions, achieving a sense of drama only hinted at on exposure.

yet by juxtaposing full orchestration with solo piano, moccio has unwittingly divided the album against itself. color, it seems, is caught between exposure’s sketchbook-like quality and the urge to transfer those sketches to the canvas.

when did it become cool to beg

when did it become cool to beg
no, no it never did
wouldn’t you rather feel it

i want to dig it out of the sand
turn it over with my fingers and make a fist
“i’ll give you a new name…”

(i’m feeling particularly warm and fuzzy tonight)

try to forget about the future

it is an unusually warm october day. here are some beats.

i was trying something a bit different here. i made almost zero effort to beatmatch. maybe that makes it sound really amateur, but i sort of like it? i dont know. somebody out there set me straight on this. i think that in general, hip-hop is better when you dont spend so much time trying to rationalize it. (so i guess i better stop typing). just try not to think about it.

2010/10/20 – sketches in c

ben and i were invited to a local radio show called sketches in c to play some songs and talk a bit about electronic music (this week is national technology week!). it was super fun though i guess i sounded pretty obviously nervous, stumbling around all not knowing how to convey ideas w/ words like a regular human being. the music went pretty well though, and it seemed like people enjoyed it.

thanks again to andrew and danielle for having us. (:
