madlib – madlib medicine show #11: low budget high fi music

the mixtape has been a fixture in hip-hop since the days of pioneering djs like kool herc and afrika bambaataa. unfortunately, in recent years the emphasis has shifted away from the dj and toward the emcee, for whom mixtapes are more or less a means of promoting an upcoming album. madlib is among the few artists in hip-hop with a genuine appreciation for the format, as he has demonstrated over the past year with his medicine show series.

the latest installment in the series, low budget hi fi music, is comprised mostly of unreleased instrumentals and songs from the wide array of projects madlib has been involved in over the past couple of years. as a dj, madlib has perfected his craft. each track flows seamlessly into the next, facilitated by madlib’s trademark use of samples (clips of documentary voiceovers, comedy sketches, television commercials) to establish the album’s “narrative”.

the medicine show series has been an insight into the diversity of madlib’s sound, exploring jazz, reggae, soul, and psychedelia. low budget hi fi music is not simply a collection of b-sides, but an example of madlib’s ability to draw from a variety of sources to create a sound of his own, music that is unmistakeably hip-hop.
